Quick update. My truck has been sold. Thanks AutoTrader. I still get to drive it for 10 days while I wait for the title so that helps a lot. Now I don’t have to rent something. One of the other things I’d been worrying about were my freshwater fish. Ignoring the suggestions to toss them in the canal I called Pet Supermarket to see if they had any ideas. They said I could donate the fish to them so I packed them up and drove them over. I still have a few things to take care of like canceling my auto insurance and renters insurance. Almost everything in the house has been sold at this point. Soon I’ll be sleeping on my mattress in the living room. As far as a cell phone I decided to go with AT&T’s pay as you go plan. My first night will also be spent in a motel. Lame I know. It’ll be a crazy first day for me so knowing I have a place to sleep the first night should ease me into the trip a little more than having to search for a place along A1A.

Good idea with the hotel. The first full day on the bike is a lot. It is a little creature comfort, but it will probably pay good dividends with a good nights sleep and a better run the second day. After the third day in the saddle you will find it is no big deal anymore. After a full day it won’t be any problem to pitch your tent and enjoy the scenery while you cook a nice dinner and relax thinking about all the things you saw today.

You’re insane. We took a 3 day ride down to St. Louis from Chicago (100 miles/day). I was in shape then. We took our backpacks but we slept in hotels every night anyway. Even though I was riding my bike at least 20 miles a day regularly, my ASS HURT.

Plan to spend the first 5 days in a hotel. Seriously.

Hey, if you’re looking to save money on hotels, but still want to meet cool people along the way and share your story, check out couchsurfing.com or warmshowers.org. Couchsurfing is for travelers of any kind, while Warmshowers cater to touring cyclists. Me and my wife have been hosting people through Couchsurfing for almost a year now and we absolutely love it! By the way, if your journey brings you through southern Idaho–in particular Twin Falls–and you need a place to crash, look up Jake and Danielle on Couchsurfing. We have a marvelous, free, comfy couch and will cook you supper :)

    Dear Nephew,

I couldn’t get you off my mind today. The first day of your trip. At mass this evening I reminded Uncle Paul to also pray for you. I see you have made your first stop. You be careful.

    Love you,
    Aunt Leta
