Quiet day today. In fact it was so quiet I didn’t even stop to take a picture of anything. A lot of riding along US1 which was good and bad. The good was that I made some decent time. The bad was as the volume of people increases so to does the volume of jerks. Only 2 though. They thought it would be funny to yell out “Oh sh*t!” or “Get a real job!” as they blew past me at 60mph. Get a real job? Not even sure what that was supposed to mean. It was tempting to lift a finger in response but I have a lot more to lose. This all happened within a 5 minute window a few miles into Port St Lucie.

Tomorrow I should be back on A1A where bikes are a lot more common although US1 does a lot of stretches with a good bike lane and I did see quite a few riders heading South. Heard about some guys towing trailers with their guitars heading North along US1. Might run into them if they jump over to A1A.

Ate lunch at the Pelican Cafe. Very cool place. Had my first beer since starting the trip (made it 2 days!). It might have been the best beer I’ve ever had. I must have talked to a dozen different people from the time I pulled up right up until I left. Everyone was was very supportive and had a tonne of questions. It was funny waving at people I could see checking out my bike from the bar. One lady came inside when I busted her but had to leave because she brought her dog in with her.

Stayed in a motel tonight. I suppose I could have found a spot to camp out if I really looked but there are slim pickings along the very busy highway. Maybe tomorrow night. I’ll need to get some better sunscreen too. My face and legs are getting a bit red. My old, worn down body is holding up OK. My knees are a bit sore but they’ll get stronger.

Staying at the hotel last night was a great idea. The continental breakfast also hit the spot. Is it wrong to take food with you though? It was only an apple and a banana. I feel kind of guilty about it.

Hi–just discovered the blog. You’ve got a great trip ahead; have fun! Do you know Barbara Savage’s book Miles from Nowhere? Sounds like southern Florida is better than it was in the late ’70s when people tried to run her and her husband off the road.

Don’t worry. No, don’t feel bad about the banana and apple. Uncle Paul has taken much more than that from continental breakfasts!

Scott, this is the coolest thing, a blog on the road! Trust me, your cousin and our kids have eaten WAY more of our share of food at a continental breakfast for you to ever feel guilty about an apple and a banana! I think one time they ran out of waffles because of my children (scavengers they are!) LOL! And don’t worry about the jerks yelling “Get a real job” they just would love to be the same thing you’re doing!! Take care!!!
