03/02 Getting out was easier than I thought. It was a very cold ride though. 39 F when I left with a steady wind out of the north. The Lem Turner road out of the city was probably my favorite this trip. Very smooth, a decent-sized bike lane and what felt like the first truly rural setting thus far.
So far, of all my cold weather gear, the neck wrap thing has proven the most useful. Without it covering my lower face and neck it would have been a tough ride. I’m not too crazy about the lobster gloves. The insides get soaked with sweat and it makes them very uncomfortable. Also busted out the shoe covers and they did a good job of keeping my feet warm (only had on Shimano sandals and wool socks). Tonight is going to be a cold one but I have very good cold weather camp gear. I’ll have to remember to leave some space in the water bottles in case they freeze.
I’m camped in less than ideal conditions for the night. No more motels for a while. I’m way a bit over budget from the last 2 nights at $100 a pop for a room. I found a spot along Old Dixie Highway about 5 miles NW of Callahan, FL. The spot is just horrible though. There are thorny vines all over the place and the pine trees are too thin to support my hammock. There’s no place at all for the tent and if I didn’t have the hammock I couldn’t stay here at all. So I’m kind of laying half-suspended off the ground with the tent floor under the hammock and the air mattress tucked inside. This is going to be a very interesting night.
