03/07 Nothing beats stealth camping when a) you have lots of water, b) you find fairly secluded undeveloped land and c) you have a hammock. :) A lot of hill climbing today. Right knee is not happy but out of 10 it hurts about 2. Total ascent today was 1273 feet. The hilliest part was US 80 heading west out of Statesboro. Up and down all morning. Finally hit the 192 and that was a perfect road. Smooth, very little traffic and no big climbs. US 80 sucked too because it has rumble strips from the white line right to the embankment. So I ended up riding in the lane a bit which wasn’t a problem except when old ladies are driving because they never move over (not kidding–never).

I was getting a little worried about water but I happened upon the only store for about 10 miles. I bought a coke (of course) and the guy let me fill all my water bottles up. Chatted with 3-4 guys outside for a bit, checked out the goats lingering nearby and then took off. Found this spot about 10 minutes later.

The Dog Dazzer is my new best friend. A big old lab was running at me so I blasted him with a couple second shot and he stopped immediately, shook his head and walked back to its house. It sure beats waiting until they are 5 feet away before I can use the Halt! and worry about actually hitting them.

So far Google Maps has not let me down but it would sure be nice if it could distinguish between paved and unpaved roads. I’ve been on paved the whole time but there are definitely some country roads that would have been shorter but there’s no way I’m slugging down a muddy Georgia road with a 145 lb bike.
