03/11 Almost in Atlanta! I’ll have to add up my total miles when I get a chance. Staying at the Comfort Inn tonight. I arrived here about 10 minutes before the sun set which was good because all the roads were packed. Jumped in the pool followed by the whirlpool and then ordered some Chinese food. I should only have a leisurely 20 mile ride in Atlanta traffic to my Dad’s tomorrow morning. Yes, I could have gotten a ride the rest of the way but that’s cheating.

Ended up getting almost no sleep last night. The only other occupied campsite was about 200 yards away but it was close enough to hear every knuckle-dragging, low-brow noise the meatheads in their RV made. This is how much these guys had going on upstairs: My flashlight has a red filter on it so my eyes stay reasonably adjusted to the darkness. Well brainiacs see the light and walk over because they thought someone was in the woods filming them with a video camera. Because they make video cameras that can see through trees and bushes 200 yards in the pitch black and its common to see them in State parks. It was like I was in the movie Idiocracy (which happened to be on a couple nights ago). So between the constant frat-boy yelling and the fact that they had to drive their loud truck with club music playing the 50 feet to the bathroom at 3:30am made for a tough night. I might have been kind of loud when I left that morning and they were still passed out. Oops. I wanted to fire off the air horn on my bike right outside their door but that would have been cruel.

Nothing else really exciting happened but the traffic volume was crazy. The last couple miles to the hotel were on the sidewalk. Also hit a couple miles of construction which gave me a nice lane to ride in all by myself. I did have a dog encounter that was a little heart-stopping. While climbing a hill with no shoulder in heavy traffic at a brisk 4.7 mph a white terrier came out of nowhere yapping right at my heals. I didn’t even have time to zap him. Fortunately I think the cars behind me saw the dog running at me and slowed down so when I swerved out into traffic a little no one was there. Good times. :)

I kind of freaked out a little in Covington too (you can see my little unexpected detour on the map). There’s a great bakery/deli in the central area of the downtown BTW. Anyway, all of a sudden the destination was coming up as un-routable. The paper map I had was OK but not very detailed that far out from Atlanta so I decided to head north and see where I end up. It finally dawned on me after 20 minutes what the problem was. The main basemap I’d been using was missing so the only problem could be with the SD card. Sure enough I popped off the battery cover and it was loose probably from when I changed the batteries last.
