03/31 Another soaker today. The last 10 miles were tough because its almost like the weather knows you’re getting close to your destination and just for fun it’ll save the best for last. When I did make it to the park headquarters I found out that the campsites were 4-5 miles in and its hilly I’m told (it ended up not being that bad). The rain had turned into a light drizzle by then so I wasn’t complaining. It was much better than getting dumped on for 35 miles. $17 is a little steep for a site but they don’t really have designated tent only sites. The cabins you can rent here are $70 a night. I’m not paying $70 for something unless it has internet access or at least happy hour since that’s on my desired amenities list now.
Once the tent was set up (no rain) I hit the showers. They are the ones that you have to hit the button every 20 seconds or it goes off. Boy was it hot. My watch showed 100 F.
The sun popped out from behind the clouds about 1/2 hour after the shower so I jumped on the bike and rode down to the Wabash River and took some pics. Right on the other side of the river is Illinois which is where I’ll be tomorrow and for the next 4 days or so. The little bike ride around the park ended up being 7 miles.
I’m really looking forward to getting to St. Louis now. I’ve only been there once on a layover so that doesn’t count (coming back to Florida from LA during hurricane Katrina). I think I’ll stay near the Arch that night and then take a cab to REI in the morning so I can grab some tougher overshoes and a second long-sleeve jersey. The overshoes are getting pretty bad. The bottom straps on each have about 1 or 2 more uses left before I might have to duct tape them.
