04/04 Nothing terribly exciting happened today. Just kidding. I rode 83.17 miles! At mile 75 the top of the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis was visible! Seeing it was like seeing the Statue of Liberty after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. :) It’s also known as the Gateway to the West which makes it a huge milestone for me. I’m hoping that once I get out of the city my time in motel rooms will drop down substantially and traffic will start thinning out a lot.

Had a nice tailwind all day so when I arrived at the turn to the campground I looked West down the quiet, smooth road and sat back while my knee and my common sense got into a heated argument. My common sense said, “It’s probably going to rain all day tomorrow so how far do you want to ride in it?” and my knee just said, “WTF!” over and over again. Common sense won out and I pushed on another 25 miles.

Grabbed a hot breakfast in Mt. Vernon before hitting Hwy 15 for the better part of the day. Nice road. A little bit of a shoulder in places but traffic was light so even without one it was pretty safe. Rode by a place called Roaches at one point. Odd name. Stopped in Nashville which is sure to throw off my Aunt Lynne who thinks I’m riding North and South just as much as I’m going East and West. :) Had a great lunch at Chickens in St. Libory. The bike riders are starting to pop up. Saw 4 different people out on the roads which is the most since Florida.

Very excited about my upcoming stay in Saint Louis with Crystal and her husband from couchsurfing.com. I’ll be there 2 nights and then I’m off to the Lewis and Clark State Memorial Park and the start of a 225 mile bike trail. Snow in the forecast for Monday!

Couchsurfing is great. The mistake some people make is that they think it’s about how to travel cheap.
Couchsurfing is about getting out of your box, meet people from other cultures and learn from each other.

What did your elbow think of the extra 25 miles? He should have had a say. :)
