04/11 As nice as the Katy Trail is when I can go 18 mph instead of 10 mph I have to go with the road. I did spend about 80% of the day on the trail but when Hwy 94 ran alongside it I took that instead. My loaded bike just takes that much more energy to pedal on a wet, soft surface. The scenery along the trail is amazing. It was especially nice riding right alongside the Missouri River with the huge cliffs right next to it. It still amazes me that the entire trail used to be railroad track.
The wind was at my back all day and the sun was finally out. The only bad thing that happened was that I finally lost my trekking pole. It must have fallen off on the trail because I would have heard it hitting the ground if it fell on pavement. The straps were secure too. I suppose someone could have grabbed it when I was in a store but I doubt it. There are much better things to grab if that was the case. Oh and a guy in a pickup blasted his horn when he rode by so I blasted my air horn right back and saluted him. He kept on going of course. Coward.
When I left the B&B this morning I wasn’t sure where I’d be staying for the night but after 20 miles or so it was looking more and more like the Steamboat Junction CG. Well I got here and it’s closed for the season still. My Irish luck kicked in because the owner of the CG, John, saw me and let me stay here anyway. $5 for the night. No water and I’m pretty low so I think I’ll bust out the water filter since there’s a little stream running behind the tent. Stomach pains here I come.
Breakfast this morning was as good as I thought it would be. Thanks for everything Lynne.
