04/14 I love the sun! It finally made an appearance at 4pm after hiding all day behind dark, grey clouds. The wind let up around the same time which was even better because it had been blowing toward me all morning. Today was probably a little colder than yesterday but at least it didn’t rain.

My back got a good workout when I left the motel this morning. For some reason someone thought it would be a good idea to build 10 stairs leading down the hallway in order to get to the 1st floor rooms. Well going down them yesterday wasn’t so bad but lifting the loaded bike up them was a chore. I guess that was my punishment for eating quite a lot of the continental breakfast.

The ride to Arrow Rock along Hwy 41 was uneventful other than there was a fair bit of heavy truck traffic. When I arrived in town the first place I stopped was the Arrow Rock Country Store. After loading up on a hot Cafe Mocha the two ladies working there, Dawn and Sue, made me a hot sandwich while I warmed up in the cafe at the back of the store. Sue must have noticed that I guzzled down the Mocha in record time because she made me a second hot coffee for no charge with whipped cream and chocolate on it. Good thing I burn up to 5000 calories per day. :) She also gave me some history about the town that I wouldn’t have learned from the visitor’s guide. The population is 54; not 70 and she’s the only African-American still living in town. She’s lived here for 40 years too. Slavery used to be common here and at one point the Black population was a couple thousand. She said everyone either moved out or passed away. The Visitor’s Center had a tonne of history about the early days of the town and the surrounding area.

After lunch I cruised around the very quite town and took some pictures. Then it was back up the road for a minute to get to Arrow Rock State Park where I’ll be camping for the night. Not another soul here although quite a few cars have driven by. The shower was good and bad. Good because it was nice and hot but bad because the stream of water was 1/2 inch wide. It wasn’t one of those ones that you have to push the button every 15 seconds so that was good too.

Kind of short day today but that was the plan. I knew the weather would be bad and it was. The back of my foot also needed more rest (the Achilles tendon is the sore part).
