04/30 Maybe I’m weird but whenever a gust of wind hits me so hard that it almost knocks me over I start smiling. It must look pretty odd to any cars that happen to see this. Anyway, I smiled a lot today. Mostly it was because the wind was coming right at me from the north all day. Right now the sun is out but its still very windy. Tomorrow its supposed to shift around so it’ll be at my back which will be nice.
Stayed an extra day in Council Bluffs to let some rain pass and to rest up. Glad I did because I needed lots of energy for today. Rode along the Loess Hills again which provided some scenic relief. Still too much traffic for me. I’m looking forward to open roads which I should get more of in South Dakota. I was also on a section of the old Lincoln Road which was started in 1915 and stretched all the way from New York City to San Francisco. It’s longer and older than Route 66.
A couple days ago while riding over some train tracks I hit a bump pretty hard and without realizing it sheared off one of the bolts that mounts the pannier rack to the frame. I noticed it yesterday so I used a tie wrap to keep in in place until I could find someone to remove the bolt (the head of it was sheared off–the bolt part was still screwed into the frame). I happened upon an auto mechanic in Crescent but he was “too busy” to drill the body of the bolt out. The population of Crescent is 537. It couldn’t have been that busy. Whatever. So the next town was my destination for the day and the first auto body shop I saw I asked the guys there if they could help me. One of them came out, pulled off the front rack, twisted off the broken bolt, replaced it was a new one (that fit perfectly!) and didn’t even charge me anything. I gave him $10 anyway though.
Grabbed some pizza for lunch and headed over to the Fairgrounds CG on the edge of town to crash for the night. $5 to stay here and there’s water and electric. There’s also only one bathroom that I could find and its locked so I called the city office and asked about it. They said there are 2 sets of bathrooms and one of them is open. I must be going blind because I can only see one building with a bathroom sign on it.
I have the whole CG to myself as usual. Where are all the bicycle tourists???
