05/03 Mount Rushmore here I come! Rode into South Dakota twice this morning. Mark, the guy that stopped by yesterday to hang out, told me about a good place to grab some breakfast but I forgot what it was called. I ending up riding over the Big Sioux River that separates South Dakota and Iowa but all I could find were a bunch of casinos. No restaurant but I probably missed it. I ended up riding the couple blocks back into Iowa and ate at a place called Harveys. Pretty good food and the coffee helped a lot. That’s one thing about this trip that I didn’t think about when I left. Unless it’s obvious what a building is the name alone doesn’t help out-of-towners that much. I only knew Harveys was a restaurant because it was the only place with a bunch of cars in the parking lot.

Last night was good and bad. Mark and his friend Rick hung out for a while and then took off on their bikes. Thanks for the Fat Tire guys. Mark, I’m truly sorry that feel the way you do about Sarah Palin. :)

The bad part was having to listen to the other people staying at the park. The group of 8? right across from me stayed up until 1am revving their motorcycle, playing the guitar and listening to the radio until 1am. The group up the hill, but well within earshot, stayed up until 3am. I thought I’d at least be able to sleep in but no such luck. Party boys next to me were up at 7:30am making noise. If I can help it I’m going to do everything I can to avoid staying at State Parks from now on, especially if they are right next to a major city. It’s just too exhausting.

Holed up in a motel tonight. I was going to stay in the city park (that has showers!) but I have too much to do and I needed a place to get some ice for my foot. It was a short day today and I’ll have to keep them short for a bit more. The last thing I want is to get into the hilly areas of the state and not have my foot at 100%.

Casinos? Have a nice rest tonight. Maybe two days resting would be the smart thing to do.

Some bike tourists carry soft earplugs for noisy neighbors and to block wind / traffic noise (one ear only). They don’t weigh much, cost little and might make you sleep easier.
