05/08 Woke up this morning to steady rain. It’s supposed to rain off and on until late tonight so I’ll hanging out in the tent today. The bigger issue is the wind. It’s about 25mph from the northwest now and should be getting up to 40mph with higher gusts. No way I’m riding in that. Glad I stocked up on food yesterday.
Little update. 7pm right now and there’s a high wind advisory out. There might be a freeze warning for tonight and tomorrow night. So far I’ve only had to go looking for one thing. The tarp that covers my bike blew off. It was about 500 feet downwind getting pushed up against a tree. Whew. I would have hated to lose that thing. Stuck it back on and made sure it’ll stay put this time.
The tent is holding up OK. I wonder in their testing how much wind they subject these things too? It’s getting a good workout today. The wind and rain from the crazy storm when I met the mushroom guy was worse but at least it only lasted a couple hours. The rain wasn’t that bad today–the cold front is coming in so fast that the clouds are past me before they can dump that much.
Glad this place has electric because my laptop is the only thing keeping me from being completely bored. I’m pretty good at Risk now.
In between rain showers I take it outside and charge it for a little bit and then run it back in when it’s about to rain again.
Cooking has been interesting. I managed to get breakfast cooked during a short break in the rain but I’m not going to get any relief from the wind. All the dinners I’ve cooked since I’ve left have been something that needed to be heated up. I’ll have to figure something out for rainy days. Maybe I’ll take the stove over to the shower building and cook on the downwind side.

The midwest doesn’t get hurricanes too often so I guess we’re lucky in that respect. However, I was pretty surprised last year when that tropical storm brushed us [Fort Lauderdale] with sustained winds about 30ish mph…and everyone was buttoning down the hatches and running around acting crazy.
It’s not out of the ordinary for the midwest to experience that a few times a month; and at least once or twice in the winter you’ll have a day when it’s so windy the house shakes and buckles with gusts up to 60. But again…at least we don’t get hurricanes!
