05/09 So far the tally is Scott 2, Wind 1. Sure it set me back a day yesterday but I showed it today. All day it threw 20mph winds in my face but I just cried laughed. The front brought some nice cool weather with it. Temp in the tent this morning was 45 F and it was probably 60 F for the high today. There was a trace of frost so it was a bit colder than that.
At this point I’m sure a few people hate me for not providing updates or calling but my cell hasn’t had reception in days and wifi isn’t happening either. Even the library doesn’t have it. The lady at the motel didn’t even seem to know what it was. I skipped that place and am staying in the town park tonight. Tracking down the guy to unlock the bathrooms was fun. The lady in the hardware/grocery store told me where he lived and it was only a couple blocks away. There are only 297 people living here so I was bound to run into him eventually. Oh, and she gave me some free brown sugar which was nice.
Not sure if it was because I was hungry or if things are really expensive here but I spent $34 on groceries. I don’t think I spent that much when I had a house. I did get a couple “extras” though. Olives, blueberries and some bagels w/ jam. No gummi bears though. Had to get some weird Real Fruit gummis. I like how they claim 4.5 servings per bag too. Gone in 60 seconds.
I was hoping to make it to Burke today but I’m not riding into the wind for another 25 miles. It’s also supposed to get stronger and start raining more.
I’m finally starting to get mentally into this whole trip thing. I kind of have a nice routine down and now that I’m healthy again (knock on wood) making it to Alaska seems very attainable. I never doubted I’d make it but I’m happy I’ve been able to deal with the minor issues that have come up. My only regret so far has been not being able to free camp as much as I’d like. Unless I just suck at it there just aren’t that many undeveloped areas left between here and Florida. Hopefully this will change as I get further west.
