05/06 Holy cow its windy today! It has to be at least 30mph from the north with gusts even higher. I was lucky and had it at my side most of the day but there were a few times I had to ride into it (mostly going up hills of course).

The ride out of Yankton was uphill for many miles but nothing too strenuous. Great scenery from the top. I always had this picture in my head of South Dakota being covered in plains with little in way of trees or hills. I’ll never admit to watching it but kind of like what you would see on Little House on the Prairie.

Arrived at Springfield (pop. 792) and pulled into one of the bar/grills to get some lunch. I asked if there was a library in town but the bartender said they were only open for 45 minutes today. She actually checked the library’s hours by looking in the newspaper. Now that’s a small town. :) Fortunately I mentioned why I wanted a library and she said I could pick up wifi in the bar from the place next door. Washed lunch down with a couple beers and walked next door to get some supplies. While I was standing there the bartender came over with the bag that has my Canon 40D in it. Oops. I would have noticed it was missing when I packed up my food but it was nice that she walked around looking for me.

Staying at the Springfield Recreation Area tonight ($10). All alone again. The showers here are perfect. Nice and hot, good pressure and not those horrible push button kind. I wanted to sleep in my hammock tonight but the wind would have spun me up into a cocoon and left me for dead. I tried setting it up to see how secure I could get it but it was just too windy. So out with the tent again. This place would be really cool in the fall when the field behind the campground has corn growing in it.

There’s a golf course up the hill and the road to it goes past the campground. Apparently lots of people golf around here. For the record I’m not a big golf fan. If you are going to develop land why not make it a park/preserve so everyone can enjoy it? Or not develop it at all and make it a wilderness area? There are remarkably few undeveloped areas left which I can certainly attest to. The courses also use a massive amount of water which doesn’t help anything. Its also certainly not doing anything to promote a healthier lifestyle for its participants which just means that much more land needs to be used for agriculture/livestock. So take that golfers. :)

Had a new power system added to the bike.
Rotting corn smells like dog poo.
Had to bring it down... too windy. :(

So how many people were golfing and how many people did you see in the park? Hence why there are golf courses. Well that and people like to drive carts and drink beer. ;)
