Leaving today proved to be an exercise in futility. After grabbing some breakfast at the Livestock Auction/Cafe where I bought a mule, a cow and 4 chickens (2 to eat and 2 for eggs), I headed over to the gas station to grab some food for the road and some crazy glue for the buckle that clips the chin strap on my helmet together. While I was fixing the helmet a father and son from North Carolina came over and we started talking about my trip. While we were talking the dad was video taping the conversation for his road trip album he’s keeping. That was kind of an odd thing to have happen in a gas station parking lot.

Once the helmet was repaired I said goodbye to the NC travelers and headed west on US-18. That lasted about 5 minutes. The wind was just too strong. Instead of pushing me into the ditch this time it pushed me out into traffic. So I’ll stay here for one more night (Crossroads Inn). Not happy. The winds are supposed to finally drop down to 7 mph tomorrow coming from the south. I’ll hold my breath.

I have a place to stay lined up in Rapid City with someone from couchsurfing.com. Her name is Loy but I’ll actually be staying with her mom because she is going to be out of town. Should be fun. I should be there Monday night.

Welcome to life on the road, Scott! You’ve been getting a big dose – injury, Visa, tedious paperwork, where to be to get mail, weather. My week in Boone, N.C. has turned into a month hoping the sun will appear once in awhile so I can see some of this beautiful area without getting too wet or blowing away. At least I have the comfort of my home on wheels. I’m in awe of how far you have traveled!

Hey Anita. That’s cool that you are waiting out the weather vs. just packing up and heading somewhere else. Looks like next week is going to be nice there. Life on the road sure takes some getting used to. I thought I was fairly prepared as far as knowing how to handle things that crop up but knowing and actually having to deal with them are two different things. Is there a road warrior’s manual that covers how to deal with frustration or did I figure that out when I had those Sam Adam’s the other day? :) If I had to extend a week into a month to wait out nasty weather I would have gone nuts. My hats off to you.

Thanks Aunt Leta. Hope you are being nice to the guys at Cookeville Bicycles. My mule is still running strong thanks to them. :)
