06/07 I’m feeling a little stupid right now. This morning I rode up over the pass. When I vacated Ennis (sorry) it was 33 F and snowing. It snowed the entire time and the temperature was well below freezing by the time I made it to the top. The view was nice but I didn’t hang around up there too long. The ride down was brutal. I should have slowed down but that’s no fun. So I froze my butt off as I sailed back down the the mountain. I think I broke my top speed record when I hit 41.4 mph.

Anyway, when I reached the town of Virginia City the first place I stopped was a cafe to load up on hot chocolate and chicken noodle soup. Then it was back into the cold (have I mentioned that I hate putting on cold, wet gloves and my cold/wet head cover?). Virginia City is the coolest old-Western town I’ve been to. In its prime almost 10,000 people lived there. When the gold dried up and everyone left it turned into a ghost town. Then some people came along and restored what they could. Over half the buildings in town were built before 1900. It’s really a perfect tourist destination if you like that sort of thing.

Staying at the KOA in Adler which is why I’m feeling stupid. It’s down in a valley so of course the sky has cleared up since I got here and the temperature is at least 15 degrees warmer than it was an hour ago. I could have easily tacked on another 30 miles for the day.

I have to mention some bad service in Ennis this morning. The waitress at the Ennis Cafe was horrible. No greeting when I came in, never said a word when I was there and actually sat there reading a book when about 4 of us looked longingly at our empty coffee cups. Never said thanks when I left either. Hope she likes her 10% tip (should have left nothing). Food wasn’t that great either. Had steak and eggs and both were over-cooked.

Hopefully it’ll be nice tomorrow and I can make up for my slack-off day today.

fantastic pictures scott!! i love yellowstone, it’s so cool there. i can’t believe you are almost here, it’s going to be so good to see you. if you think people on the road take a lot of pics of you, just wait!! it looks really cold i don’t think it can be very good for you to be putting on wet gear( i know it’s unavoidable but..) don’t you have an extra set of whatever to wear that’s dry?

I have an extra set but they would just get wet too. As long as I keep moving and don’t stop for more than a minute I usually stay pretty warm. I can only think of one time where I was actually cold and that was after I’d stopped for lunch when it had been raining (and was cold and windy). If I started getting hypothermia I’d just stop, change clothes, pitch my tent and crawl into my toasty sleeping bag. It would look funny at the side of the road but it beats freezing to death.
