06/11 I wasn’t planning on making today a 78 mile day but it just kind of ended up that way. At least I was in a better mood than yesterday. Neck feels better and I didn’t feel like I was riding through mud all day. Of course the wind was blowing at me all day and I still hate it.
Tonight I’m staying at the Bitterroot Gateway RV CG. This wasn’t my first choice but I’m glad I ended up here. The original grand master plan had me down for a ride all the into Missoula. My butt had other plans though. So my stop for the night was going to be in a town called Stevensville. While I was looking for the motel I saw a police car so I rode over and asked where it was. He was a really nice guy and told me about all the places close by, including the city park. Hmmm, a free place. That was it then. I went to the gas station and bought some snacks and a 20oz beer and headed over. Sadly the park is right next to the road. No way I wanted to be that close to traffic so I checked my GPS and saw 2 other motels only a couple miles up the road. The first one was out of business as was the second one.
18 miles later I made it here to Lolo. The Days Inn was too expensive so I went to a gas station to see if they knew of a cheaper motel or campground. The guy pointed across the street to this CG and said they allowed tent camping here but to be careful because it’s one of those places “on the other side of the tracks”. Undeterred I rode over, gave the lady (Karen) $10 and am sitting here in my tent after a nice shower, with wifi access, water and electric. The gas station guy must think that because 80% of a sites are occupied by people that live out them that automatically makes the people dangerous. Josh, a couple sites down, repairs bicycles and offered to let me use his to run to the store so I don’t have to ride my loaded one over. Pretty nice.
Just outside town I met Kendal and Rachel. They are riding from Seattle to Virgina to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Check out their web site at www.theunforgettablejourney.org.
