Kakwa River Recreation Area, Alberta to Grande Prairie, Alberta
Posted by scott in Leg 107/03 Today was nearly perfect. Perfect weather, lots of friendly waves, great scenery, not too many hills and I even saved a huge frog from a slow death in a fire pit he couldn’t escape from. And guess what ruins it? OK, not ruined but holy crap what is wrong with people?
I’m on mile 50 or so looking forward to getting into the city. The best part about the day up until then had been that probably half the people that drove by me waved. Not even fingers-lifted-off-the-steering-wheel waves–full on lifting the arm, honking to make sure I see them waves. Plenty of thumbs up too. Something like that might be hard for some people to appreciate but if you are pretty much by yourself all day having complete strangers show their support is very encouraging. Then some asshole sitting in the passenger seat of a jacked up pickup comes along and gives you the finger. I was so surprised I nodded to him like I would if someone waved to me! OK, I’ve been flipped off maybe 3 or 4 times but that was in Georgia so I wrote it off (sorry GA). But northern Alberta? My homeland? After everyone else has been so nice? That just sucked.
Anyway, other than that it was a great day. The weather was amazing. No rain, partly cloudy and a mostly light wind. Walking over to the store tonight shorts and t-shirts were the norm for everyone wandering about the city.
I was going to stay in a place called Rotary Park but when I got there the lady said they only have spots for RV’s. So I rode to a motel and got a room. I pedaled far enough today.
I spoiled myself for dinner. For the first time since leaving Florida I had sushi! OK, I don’t think I had any in Atlanta but my Dad will have to correct me on that. It was sooooo good. And Supporo too of course. The sashimi pieces were huge and very fresh.
The other thing I picked up on the way back to the motel was some protein powder. That should get me bulked back up again.
It’s 80 miles to Dawson Creek and the start of the Alaska Highway. Not sure if I’m going to tackle that in one day. We’ll see. Weatherbonk says there might be an east wind tomorrow which would be rare but would give me a nice tailwind. The first 50 miles is mostly uphill, although not too steep.
Please, please, please let today be the last day I hear about Palin.
Update: My horrible pictures from Grande Cache are #1 when you search for “photos of grande cache canada day parade” on Google. I’m never going out without a normal camera again. It’s actually kind of interesting for me to see what search terms bring people to my site. Here’s some from today:

Happy 4th Scott!
Scott, I hope you don’t pay any attention to the comment regarding your posts. 99% of us love your postings. “DUDE” being the 1%. I’m not being partial either. LOL Many of my friends read your posts and always comment on them. You do an excellent job at writing. Life is not a white picket fence and a bowl full of cherries. I think someone is suffering from some jealousy whether he admits it or not.
Love you and be safe.
that is one sexy looking frog. did you pick it up with your bare hands or did you have to use some kind of scoop? my money is some kind of scoop and a lot of screaming:)
Hey man! I saw you pedalling towards GP on hwy 40, you were just coming into town from the south into the industrial area. I was headed south driving a burgundy and white Kenworth pulling a large gravel crusher load, and gave you a wave, you looked right at me and nodded….lol. Kudos to you on your adventure! Sorry about the d!ckheads in the big 4-by, they are not typical northern Albertans, please keep your spirits up….the farther north you travel, the better the peeps are.
Troy from Grimshaw, mile zero on the Mackenzie highway.
I should add, I found this from a google search for GPS tracks of the Kakwa Falls area, planning on a dual sport motorcycle trip that way on the August long weekend. Cheers….
Caught up from the first posted report. Wish I had known all you have been through, and overcome….I would have bought you a steak and the biggest bag of gummi bears you could carry. Safe journey, and take care.
