07/04 Happy 4th of July! No fireworks for me tonight but then again this campground seems to be occupied by a younger crowd so you never know. It’s right on the edge of town about a 1/4 mile away from a race track. When I got here the place was filled with tents and pickups but no people. I think most of them walked over to the races. You get a pretty good deal here. $10 for electric, water, showers (in a caboose) and presumably wifi but I can’t get connected.

While I was riding along I decided I wanted to stay in Dawson Creek tomorrow so this town is about half way. It rained on me twice getting here but nothing too bad. It was nice and warm today and the wind was under 10mph. For the first time in a long time I actually rode through more than one town/city in the same day. The place I’m at now is #3. #2 was Beaverlodge which is quite famous for it’s large beaver statue just inside town at the visitor center. I read that it’s tied for the largest beaver in Canada. It really was a fine looking beaver.

I left Grande Prairie kind of late because there was a Rogers outlet across the street and if anyone would know if a sim card from them would work in my Blackberry they would. Turns out it works just fine and I’m the proud owner of a new Calgary phone number. I’m just going to mostly use it to update my site on the sidebar thing if I can’t get wifi. Coverage for the phone still doesn’t look too good from Dawson Creek until Alaska. It’s on a prepaid plan so I don’t have to sign a contract for 2 years and I only have to pay for the phone when I use it. No point in getting a regular plan if I won’t have reception for a month (which is quite possible). The only bad part is you can’t get data (email) access with a prepaid plan but SMS will work just fine.
