07/08 Lot’s of records smashed today. I definitely went up and down more hills than any section of road so far. The grade on most wasn’t too bad but there were a lot of hills. Many times I’d get to the top only to see one more valley that I had to cross and then go back up again. Total ascent today 3942 feet. Not sure if this is true yet but I think I broke my top speed at 42.2 mph. Also hit the 5000 mile mark for my trip so far.

The only big change over the scenery from yesterday is that I could see the Rocky Mountains off in the distance. I don’t start crossing them until after I hit Fort Nelson. Saw lot’s of deer today but not much else. 2 moose didn’t get off the road fast enough which kind of sucked. If people would just slow down going over hills or around corners it would make a big difference.

The weather was OK for the first 50 miles but the showers and wind hit pretty hard for the last 20. It got a lot colder too. I’m really glad I kept the fly from my hammock–it makes a great rain shelter. It’s raining out now so I’m ducked away in my tent. Hopefully it clears up for tomorrow.

Saw a couple touring cyclists heading South today. I didn’t get their names but it was a mom and her son. They are riding from Whitehorse to Edmonton.

The campground here is $15. It’s pretty rough too. The roads are hard-packed dirt and the shower house was clean but looked like it was handbuilt. The fridge they keep the beer in was broken. That didn’t stop me from having a Bud though. :)

Getting an escort to camp. The guy driving reminded me of the old, Cuban assassin in Scarface.

good job son that’s amazing, pedaling 5000 miles. great to see all is well. do you really think it’s necessary to go that fast downhill? first chance you get give me a call, it would be nice to hear your voice. SLOW DOWN.

  3. When do you get to the “rollercoaster highway”? That thing was torture in a car… not sure how it would be on a bike. We were so incredibly sick that day — I think we drove almost 1000 miles in one marathon day while going through.

    Jeez Steve,

Let your little boy go as fast as he wants. I remember how fast you went downhill. Somehow that didn’t come out right. Scott, go as fast as you want.

  5. Aunt Leta says:

Scott….there is no reason for you to listen to your dad. He never listened to our dad.

    Great accomplishment nephew.
