07/18 Made it to the Yukon! The Alaska Highway jumps back into BC 5 more times before finally staying in the Yukon. Tonight I’m spending my first official night here.
#1 project for Watson Lake tomorrow is to find something to cook/eat in so the freaking mosquitoes don’t eat me alive. I don’t know how John and Ed are going to survive sleeping under a tarp. If I can find a cheap motel I might take a day off to rest. It’s been a couple weeks and my old body could use a break.
Today was really tough because I ran out of food with lots of calories in it. For breakfast this morning I had a tuna sandwich and my last Snickers bar. I would have had oatmeal but the mosquitoes were too bad. At mile 20 I was beat. I had almost no energy so I made another sandwich. Still wasn’t nearly enough though and I had nothing with sugar in it. At one of the overlooks there was a picnic table so I made some oatmeal. That helped but only for a few miles then I was tired again.
When I got to the lodge here, which is only a snack place now, I had 4 Cokes, a sub and a bag of Ketchup Chips. I don’t think I’ve had the Old Dutch Ketchup Chips chips in over 20 years. Just like I remembered though. Yum. Fort Nelson was the last place with an actual grocery store so I guess I didn’t do too bad since I had enough for 3 meals a day plus snacks every day but today. I wasn’t planning on stopping in Fireside which is why I ran out out of snack food. I’m not letting that happen again.
You wouldn’t think a buffalo would be stealthy but I had another surprise encounter with five of them today. They were just lounging up next to the side of the road and didn’t even get up when I rounded a corner and came within 20 feet of them. I just kept right on riding.
The people running the cafe here let me camp next to the store for free and I got to post my Facebook update using their internet terminal. No wifi though.

Honestly I don’t even like buffalo meat. I’d tried elk too and that wasn’t much better. I’ll stick to good old cows from now on.
