07/26 My recent wildlife drought ended today when I spotted a black bear in the bushes next to the road. It took him a while to notice me and when he did he didn’t look too happy. I’d only taken a single picture with my little camera but when he saw me and just stared like I was dinner I took off. So that’s why there’s a picture of a bear’s ass below.

The ride into Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, was uneventful other than the bear. I even had a pretty strong tailwind to help me along. Whitehorse isn’t right on the Alaska Highway, you have to get off at one of two exits and follow a road that leads to the downtown area which sits alongside the Yukon River. When I leave tomorrow I head out using the North exit which is called 2 Mile Hill. Should be fun. Whitehorse’s population of 20,000 or so also represents 66% of the total population of the Yukon which works out to a population density of 0.17 people per square mile. :)

When I arrived in town I rode over to the bike shop just to make sure I could find it in the morning since they are closed on Sunday. Next stop was Starbucks and then a bit of shopping. My earlier mission of finding a mosquito-proof shelter to cook/eat in is complete. I’m now the proud owner of a Sea to Summit Personal Mosquito Shelter. Can’t wait to try it out. Then it was a trip to the grocery store. That’s where I got in trouble. By now I should know better than to shop for food when I’m hungry. I way over did it. For example, I bought a box of 16 chocolate bars for a price that worked out to less than $0.80 each. How could I turn that down though? They are $2 each at some places. Or the 1 kg bag of Jube Jubes? It went on and on.

On the recommendation of 2 cyclists I met at the camp last night, Phil and Manu (web site), I ate dinner at a Chinese All-You-Can-Eat buffet. The selection wasn’t huge but the food was good and they even had a couple trays of dim sum (which I love!).

Staying at the Stratford Motel tonight. No wifi in the room which stinks. I had a tip from a guy on a motorcycle a couple weeks ago that the owner of a bakery here might let me crash (he’s on couchsurfing.com) but the place was closed. If I can arrange that for tomorrow I might stay an extra day so I can check out a couple of the museums.

In unrelated news my Dad joined Facebook today! Hell has offically frozen over. ;)
