More to come later but it looks like I’m going to be in Fairbanks until Tuesday; possibly Wednesday. I’m over at the bike shop and it looks like my second rear Phil Woods Touring hub is bad. This time it was something about the teeth inside being worn out causing medal shavings to impede the rotation. 5000 miles on this one. It also sounds like this is a known problem with the specific part that wore out. Phil Woods is express mailing the parts. One of the guys at the bike shop is letting me stay at his place until the parts get here.
I’ll save any comments on the hub for later because anything I write now would be bad.

Sorry about you bad luck but at least you have a place to stay
Yeah I’m very happy to have a place to crash for a few days. The guy and his GF, Lisa, are awesome for letting me stay with them like this.
Don’t blog angery, Toonses!!
Hey Scott. I lost track of you for a while due to company for a couple weeks. Sat here this morning catching up on your whereabouts. Uncle Paul & I are extremely proud of you and your accomplishment. Be safe and you are always in our prayers!
What’s up with the Phil Wood hubs? These are supposed to be the gold standard, super heavy duty, last a lifetime, leave them in your will.
I have mixed feelings on this. I’m carrying 62 lbs of gear on 2x rear panniers and a trunk bag which sit right on top of the rear hub. This is a lot of stress especially with my 200 lbs sitting in the saddle. On the other hand these are supposed to be “touring” hubs and for a fully self-supported tour this isn’t that much more weight than what I’ve seen others carry. Maybe they need a super heavy duty touring hub line? Or just stress test the hubs so people understand what they can expect from them. It can’t be that hard to simulate a loaded bike on various road conditions to see when it fails. I’d try something else but I’m not sure if there’s anything better. Getting rid of some of my weight isn’t going to happen. Their warranty has been rock solid so at least I have that in case something fails.
