09/16 In yet another sign that dogs hate bicyclists, apparently on or off a bike, one of them almost attacked me when I was walking into a store today. I was riding through one of the towns along the beach when I spotted a knife shop. Needing some repair work on my beautiful Ka-Bar knife I headed over.

It was pouring rain so I pulled up, lowered the kickstands and walked up to the open front door. Being the nice guy I am I jumped up a couple inches so I could shake some of the water off before going inside. Well this demonic black thing inside the store didn’t like me bouncing around like a big black and yellow bumblebee (had my flashy raingear on) so it comes running at me barking and growling like its going to tear my head off. I yelled, “Whoa!” really loud and covered my important parts with my hand because the dog was heading right for them. Luckily it stopped about a foot away so I didn’t have to do anything other than yell at it. The knife was folded shut but it’s all steel and would still make a good blunt weapon.

The store owner came running over and grabbed Satan by the collar and dragged it away from me. It hadn’t stopped growling the entire time. Satan, of course, is a nice, quiet dog and never acts like that he tells me. The guy felt pretty bad about the whole thing so he fixed the knife for $1. The sheer lack of respect I have for dog owners that have no idea what their “pet” is capable of grows every day. A dog that acts aggressively like that is doing it on instinct and will undoubtedly end up hurting someone. I’m sure he won’t do anything sensible like train the dog or keep it on a leash though.

It was a wet one today which made for some nasty riding on the busy 101. Neahkahnie Mountain needed climbing just before Manzanita so got to ride up that toward the end of the day. The views along the Oregon coast are just stunning and from the top of the mountain you could see forever. Went through another tunnel but this one also had the flashing lights that bicyclists can activate so motorists know bikes are in the tunnel. Also rode through the very popular resort city of Cannon Beach and got to see Haystack Rock. That was pretty cool but I wish it wouldn’t have been raining. Cruising along looking for good picture opportunities isn’t much fun soaking wet. Still had a great lunch and enjoyed checking out all the people.
