09/22 Slacked off today and only rode for 30 miles. The biggest reason I stopped is because my butt hurts. I really hate my Brooks seat–it just rubs me the wrong way so it’s time to end our relationship. As soon as I can find something to replace it with I will.

Saw some gorgeous scenery along the coast today. Only passed through a couple little towns, one of which was Nesika Beach. I stopped at the deli/market for the biggest cheeseburger I’ve seen in quite some time. The number of towns along this part of Oregon is noticeably less than up north. Just means less DQ’s for me to stop at (although there was one in Gold Beach that I hit up).

Met a guy staying at the motel here who has quite the touring portfolio under his belt. Oris gave me some good info on riding in Baja California which I’ll be keeping in mind as I plan my Mexico trip in the coming weeks. His web site is here. Also met Rob and Susan as I was leaving town this morning. They are riding a tandem down to Crescent City, CA. We chatted for a while outside the grocery store.

One other interesting character that I ran into was a guy towing 2 trailers. The last trailer was a standard bicycle trailer and the one in front was what he was using to transport his dog. I didn’t catch his name but it looks like he’s been on the road a while. I saw him a couple days ago but I missed the fact that he had a dog with him. Since I like offering opinions here’s what I think of touring long distance with a dog (or cat or any other animal): it’s cruel. The dog had no protection from the sun/rain, it’s probably scarier than hell for the dog having to listen to cars coming up behind it all day and it can’t move around at all. I just don’t understand some people. It seems like a very selfish thing to do.

Keep pedaling Scott. I saw you mention Baja. If you decide to go there and head towards Cabo San Lucas, I have friends that live between La Paz and Cabo. They speak English also. Be careful.

Thanks Uncle Dave. I haven’t planned my Mexico route just yet but I’ll keep that in mind. I still have my bear spray so I’ll use that on any highway robbers. :)

I was just thinking about leaves myself yesterday. It’s still hot and humid down here. The license tag colors haven’t started changing yet.

Has it been wet? Is the seat flairing open and chafing the insides of your legs? Try lacing it. http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-148421.html

Hey Eric. It gets wet pretty much every time it rains. Not directly, but from moisture and from water splashing up from underneath. I did end up using a couple tie wraps to pull it tighter and now I get to break it in again. Maybe it’ll do better this time.
