12/02 Great day today. A caravan of off-road guys told me about a campground just outside of town so I headed over there. To get to it you have to ride a half mile dirt road but that’s actually a plus since it cuts down on the noise from passing trucks. It turned out not to be all that great (US $6 and no showers) but its a massive CG and there were very few people. I rode past the 4×4 guys that told me about the place and found a nice spot under some trees.

I rode through some of the most spectacular landscape I’ve ever seen this afternoon. The last time I was just awe struck by a place was all the way back up in Alaska. The area is called the Riscal de Catavina boulder field. It started around 10 miles north of where I am now and from what I heard it continues on, and looks even better, to the south. It’s hard to describe how fantastic looking it is. The road cuts through massive fields of rocks–scattered in and around the clusters of rocks are a dozen varieties of cacti and other desert plants. For as far as you can see in any direction this is what it looks like. You really have to see it to appreciate it. My poor camera just can’t do this place justice.

According to my map, I thought I’d see one or even two active volcanoes today. I guess active doesn’t mean spewing lava. :)

  1. I LOVE all of these photos….just amazing!! I’d be very afraid there…all desolate looking.
What the heck is that structure w/ all of the graffiti?

Google says the painting is of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The wall was there, I think, to keep the wind from blowing out the candles that, I presume, are intended to stay lit 24×7. The fact that the entire area was covered in graffitti and all the used candles were just thrown in a pile on the ground (along with lots of other garbage) kind of drowned out any cultural significance the place might have had for me.

If it scares you then you should totally throw some camping stuff in that dog carrier you have and go touring. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. :)
