12/01 It seemed like it was one long climb today. It was a little tough after having been sick for 3 days so I stopped a little early so I can rest up. Tomorrow shouldn’t be too hilly from looking at my map.
About 10 miles into the day another touring rider crested a hill and came into view. First one I’ve seen in quite a while. His name was Jeff and he’s on his way to Vancouver (which should make for a very cold ride further north). He started down in Argentina. Naturally I asked if he’d run into any problems with people along the way. No problems at all he said. He did mention that dogs start becoming a very big problem once you cross over into mainland Mexico and things go from bad to worse after that. Its not uncommon to have a couple dozen chase you every day. He had a nice sized bamboo stick strapped to his bike for them. I’ll have to try to find one. He also said there are a lot of dead dogs alongside the road. If he had to guess he said he’s seen about a thousand. Wow.
At the top of one of the 300 hills I climbed today I came up on a white pickup stopped in a turnoff. I waved to the people standing there and rode for about 3 seconds before I heard, “Hey, do you want a sandwich?” Hell yes I did.
They turned out to be the nicest family. The dad spoke fairly good English so while I ate he asked about my trip. I should asked to take a picture of them. I always forget.
I wouldn’t quite call where I’m staying tonight a town– more like a ranch. The group of buildings, including a little church, sit inside a barbwire fence. To camp inside the fence cost US $3.50 vs. free outside the fence next to the road. I’m inside.
