12/10 Out on the road early after having a great breakfast minus all the damn flies that seem to only annoy me. Stopped to re-take some pictures in Santa Rosalia that didn’t turn out so well. Afternoon shots are next to impossible because the sun always seems to find its way into the shot.
Had a bit of a climb for the first few miles and then the road leveled off until just before Mulege. It turned out to be a pretty decent riding day. Not too much traffic and the wind stayed behind me most of time.
Met Ed while stopped for a Coke break at the one and only market in San Lucas (might have been San Bruno). He lives in a gringo community which boasts the highest concentration of conservative republicans using solar power in all of North America.
He might be reading this so if you are Ed I forgot to ask for details on why you or the rest of the people living in the community left the States? Just curious. It sounded like politics and not financial reasons motivated you to leave but I wasn’t sure. I know a few people that were all up on heading to Canada but I never met anyone that actually did end up moving to another country, especially if it was (voluntary and) for political reasons.
Mulege is a pretty neat town. There are a lot of one way streets which threw me off a little especially when not all of them have signs. Small, touristy shops with pottery and blankets are fairly numerous. While I was out riding I saw about half a dozen Americans waking around so I guess it’s a popular spot for siteseeing. Found a hotel that’s not too bad ($31) but its right on the main road so the traffic is loud (mufflers do not exist in this country and honking is a common form of casual communication). The other places I stopped at were a little cheaper but that seemed kind of sketchy.
