Tixtla, GRO to Chilapa de Alvarez, GRO
Posted by scott in Leg 2, tags: Government, Mexico, United States03/01 Here’s 20 miles in Mexico. There should be about 20 more of these pictures but I didn’t stop until 5 miles into the ride. For the first time in Mexico I saw 2 guys picking up garbage at the side of the road. The one guy said they worked for the government. I think they are wasting their time. A bulldozer and a dump truck or hundreds of people are needed for this mess. The 40 miles yesterday were just like this. He also said they don’t have community service as a punishment for criminals. I asked him why people toss their garbage out on the road and he didn’t have an answer.
My left Achilles tendon is a little sore from all this climbing so I cut today short. Should be good to go tomorrow. Looking down the road it doesn’t look like its quite as hilly as it has been.
Update: here’s a really good write-up about the garbage problem in Mexico: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4916749.html

All I can say is YUCK!
And I thought the litter in TN is bad. What a mess.
You can make a fortunate in recyclables.
I meant to say …fortune …still looks wrong
I think you got it. I was reading about recycling programs in Mexico and there are some but they are woefully inadequate. The litter on the roads isn’t just plastic bottles either (80% of it is so fixing that would be a good start). “Only several dozen of Mexico’s more than 2,500 cities, towns and villages have a landfill or other kind of municipal garbage dump.” How does that even happen? Recycling will never work if you can’t even collect the garbage. It sounds like the government is to blame for the failure. They can’t manage the infrastructure, they can’t educate the people and they can’t enforce the laws.
Where are you staying in Chilapa
I can’t recall the name of the motel (I think it was “something villas”. I’d stayed there back on Monday night. If you know the area and zoom in on the Google map above it shows the location. The place was really nice. It was more like a bed and breakfast with the room being all decorated.
