08/10 Managed to skirt around Guatemala City avoiding what would have been a certain mess. When I rode into Mexico City I had the benefit of a detailed map for my GPS so navigating was fairly easy. Since leaving Mexico I’m down to a paper map and a really high level GPS map that only shows (some) major highways. Guatemala doesn’t have much in the way of road signs so depending on them to get me through the city of 3 million would have probably resulted in me riding around for weeks looking for a way out. I did wind up on the wrong roads a couple times but some friendly locals got me back on track.

There were a couple big hills today and heading down one I hit a new top speed record–43.1 MPH. :)

Pinula only has one hotel and it took quite a bit of asking/riding to find. It’s way too overpriced though. It’s twice as much as other places I’ve stayed and the cheapest room didn’t even have a bathroom. The shared one had a shower but the water pressure was so low the electric shower head wouldn’t kick on so it was cold water only. There’s a hotdog stand across the street which made up for a little of it.
