09/10 Not really that more more to add about Granada now that I think about it. The city was charming enough–lot’s to take pictures of and it was much cleaner than Leon. There were some greasy-looking expats wandering around looking for local women. Had lunch at Kelly’s Bar. Great place and excellent food. The rooftop views were from the bell tower at one of the cathedrals. For $1 they let you climb up the very narrow staircase and check out the city. The room in the hotel (Hotel Terrasol) was the hottest room I’ve ever stayed in. There was a fan but it just moved the hot air around. Not sure how I fell asleep. The owners were great and took good care of my bike (which they don’t allow in the rooms).

Tonight I’m staying on the Isle of Ometepe. The island was formed by 2 volcanoes, one of which is active. They sit right next to each other and formed a single island when their lava flows ran into each other. The island is also the largest lake island in the world (172 sq mi). When I got off the ferry the plan was to ride to a beach-side camping area but I think I’ll stay in town and just go for a ride around the island tomorrow. At least I know my stuff will be secure. There’s supposed to be lots of wildlife on the island including a couple species of monkey. There’s also a species of freshwater shark in the lake.

The ride today was blah. Just a lot of ranches, cows and horses. It was nice and flat so I made great time getting here. One thing I noticed about Nicaraguans, especially kids and teens, is that they don’t like getting passed on their bike. If they see me coming, even if it’s obvious that I’m going much faster, they’ll pedal like mad to stay in front of me. That never lasts long since I always catch them but it can get a little annoying especially if I pass them and then they pass me again.
