01/12 Quito is no more. Karin, Marten and I left this morning to sunny skies and with a very short day ahead of us. 11 miles after leaving we made it to the Casa de Ciclistas owned by Santiago. We’re planning on staying here for 2 nights and then heading south.
As soon as I got here my right sandal split in the back so I’ll have to get that fixed tomorrow. Maybe they can re-enforce the left sandal as well since it’ll probably break before too long.
There are some other cyclists staying here. Monika from Switzerland and Zdenek from the Czech Republic. There are a few sleeping options here. There’s a private room, some space on a garage floor (no cars are kept in it) or you can pitch a tent in the huge yard. I picked the yard.
The VDO MC1.0+ bicycle computer I picked up in Florida is not working out as well as I thought it would. It’s just way too susceptible to interference. I moved it in front of my laptop just now and the mph shot up to 67. Of course that screwed up my trip distance, average speed, max speed and the total trip odometer. The temperature reading this afternoon showed 96F because it was in direct sunlight. So that is useless too. About the only data I kind of trust on it is the average grade. The max grade was also wrong. It showed 21 degrees and there’s no way I went up a 21 degree hill today.
The “disturbing” thing I mentioned had to do with where I was staying in Quito. I’m waiting to find out the outcome of an other email before I write anything here though.
