01/21 Rough night last night. Karin and Marten both got sick and had to move into a dorm room (faster bathroom access). We suspect it was some funky peanuts. The girl working at the La Moca lodge gave them a bag from a fridge that has seen better days. I’m glad I skipped eating them. Fortunately they are both feeling better today.

Getting any sleep was next to impossible. The 2 dogs living here sleep in the garage and love to bark at everything that walks by. This went on all night. I don’t think I’d recommend camping here just for the fact that sleep is so hard to come by.

Most of the people that come here seem to be rich European mountain climbers and the lodge is decked out with very expensive decor to suit them. Everything from the food in the restaurant that they buy at a huge supermarket instead of from local shops to a single beer costs triple what it would cost in town. There’s only one guy working here and he lives on site. He takes care of the maintenance, checking everyone in, cleaning the rooms, cooking for everyone in the restaurant and washing the dishes. An extra guy is brought in if there are more than 12 guests. The owner pays him a very low salary so the extra 10% charge on everything helps cover that.

The clouds were gone this morning and we had a perfect view of the volcano. We’re pretty lucky to be able to see it. Other cyclists have spent days riding around it and never saw a thing thanks to constant cloud cover.

K&M need a rest day to recover from the food poisoning so we’ll stay here today and move on tomorrow.
