05/08 Karin got me again. Last night she jokingly said something about my spokes breaking today. Sure enough one on the rear tire broke and I had to ride a slightly wobbly bike for 20 miles. Marten and I (mostly him) had to pop the cassette off to get one of my extra spokes in but after that the install went great and I should be all set for another day riding. Karin didn’t plant any curses on me so it should be an uneventful day tomorrow (minus the normal weird things that happen).

Paved road from Cajamarca but very strong headwinds and a fair bit of traffic. The road was in decent shape. The one big climb had a couple steep spots but for the most part it was easy. Scenery was mostly limited to treeless mountains and valleys dotted with crops.

San Marcos is a little crazy. It’s a small town but we got here as the market was wrapping up on the main street so we had to weave in and out of cows/chickens and keep our heads low because the ropes used to secure the overhead tarps are never more then 6 feet off the ground. The hostel we’re at is pretty nice for S20. No hot water in my room but some of the others have it. Water shortages are common and most places only get it for a few hours in the morning. They have a tank on the roof so it’s available here all day.
