05/23 They finally got me. Stupid freaking dogs. 2 of them sitting next to the road saw me coming and decided to chase down something else for no reason whatsoever. When I saw them I stopped and picked up a rock knowing that these stupid dogs would run after me as soon as I passed. Sure enough, being worthless cowardly animals, they waited until my back was to them and then started with the barking right next to my feet as I rode by at a little slower pace. When I raised my arm to throw the rock they stopped so I threw it away. Unfortunately the damage was already done.
The road was hard packed heading down into the valley but thanks to a layer of dirt I’d been pretty careful all the way down because there was very little traction. Well my front tire did a little wobble after I tossed the rock away and the next thing I know I’m flying off the bike onto the road. My handlebar mirror and horn both broke which kind of sucks. I used some crazy glue to fix the mirror and it might be OK until I bump it on something. My left hand took the brunt of the fall and it’s killing me. It’s a few hours since the spill and it feels better so I don’t think I broke anything.
As for the stupid dogs, God help the next one that even looks at me funny when I’m riding down the road. The rocks will be flying before, during and after if it so much as twitches. If the dog is with it’s owner, as is often the case with sheep herders, the owner better control the dog or I’ll throw rocks at them too. Just kidding.
I’m tired of having to risk my bike and body every day. It’s bad enough I have to listen to these retarded things barking all night. My aim has always been pretty good and the best way to teach something stupid not to do something is with a little negative physical conditioning.
Cusca was only a few miles further along which was good because riding along a bumpy road didn’t feel so great on my hand. I took a room in the first place I could find. Cusca is tiny compared to Corongo and I was surprised this restaurant even had a room available. Turns out there’s a hostel at the plaza in a big white building but of course they had no sign up which is kind of dumb but whatever. I didn’t go check out the rooms but I’m sure they are much better than this one. This room wouldn’t be bad if you’re a midget and never have to pee. The ceiling is about 5 feet from the floor and the bathroom is outside, down some rickety stairs, around the corner and a few doors down. There’s no lock on the inside of the door so I hope no one tries to molester me tonight. There seems to be a plethora of attractive women here so maybe no lock is a good thing.
The scenery coming down from the pass after Corongo was gorgeous. The wind was a bit brutal today. Very strong and cold all morning. No rain though. I’m really looking forward to wrapping the northern end of the range and then heading south until it’s time to hang a right and ride up and across it.
