07/01 Brrrrr. 35 F and the sun just went down. Camped behind a school in the tiny village of Pucabamba. There wasn’t anything open as far as stores but I’m set for food and water. An older guy who gave me the OK to set up camp might be the only resident of this village. This is about 1000 feet higher than I’ve ever camped before.
It was 35 km from Huancavelica to the only other village, Astobamba, where I grabbed some lunch and couple snacks. The road was dirt leaving Huancavelica but for the most part it wasn’t bad. It was very dusty though and only one out of 30 cars/trucks slowed down as they blew by me on the narrow road at full speed. After Astobamba the surface changed to hard packed and rocky.
Last night when I was out foraging for food in Huancavelica there were even more police in riot gear (big plastic shields) and several tires were burning in the streets. It was kind of strange because lot’s of people were walking around and no one seemed to be paying much attention to the police, the tires or to me. Not sure what the problem was but the smell from the tires was bad so I stayed in my room the rest of the night.
