08/23 Well that didn’t take long. I’ve only been back on the road for 3 days and my stomach is upset.
It’s not the worst I’ve ever felt but I had to cut the ride today a little short. I’m sure it was something I ate which doesn’t surprise me because of the last 4 meals I’ve eaten, 3 of them came with a piece of hair in it.
Found a nice hostel in Sicuani to stay in. Hostel Milagros is the name and it was S40 (for a big room, TV, internet and a nice hot shower). The population here is 33,575 which is just the right amount of people to support lot’s of restaurants, a couple nice bakeries and a decent market. Dinner was chicken but the highlight was when they started playing music videos on the big screen. First it was “You’re the One that I Want” from the movie Grease followed by “YMCA”. I looked around as if to say, “Hey, I’m not the one that picked these…” but no one seemed to care.
Last night I stayed in a little town called Checacupe. The place was right next to the road and boy am I glad I bought those ear cover things because it was loud all night.
The highway up until this afternoon was perfect to ride on but then the shoulder I’d been enjoying faded away leaving me right next to all the crazy, honking bus and taxi drivers. Hopefully the road south of here is better because it heads up to a pass and riding uphill with no shoulder is not fun.
Not too much in the way of scenery since Cusco. There are some big hills on both sides of the valley and the river that runs parallel to the road was deep enough for a bus load of tourists to head down it on some big inflatable rafts. I’m still trying to get used to this new camera. One thing that’s been a bit of a problem is the 50mm lens that I keep attached to the body. It’s light so I can keep the camera in my handlebar bag but it’s not the best for landscape pictures (focal length too high). The 18-135mm lens would be better to leave attached but then I have nowhere accessible to keep it.
