With Mother’s Day being this weekend, and it being a huge thing in Argentina, I thought I’d book another 3 nights here in Salta and make a little vacation out of this. I’d avoid the holiday traffic and hotel booking problems on the weekend should I happen to be in need of one. I went out to pay for the extra nights and the manager comes over and utters words that resonate so well with me, “Ummm, actually there’s a little problem.” It seems that they screwed something up and wanted to move me to another hostel because they needed my room. This was a first. I’ve been asked to switch rooms before (once maybe) but never hostels.

Normally I’m a pretty accommodating guy but I have 6 bags of cycling crap scattered all over this room and the thought of having to pack it all up just to unpack it all again is not my idea of a vacation. They also haven’t cleaned my room since I got here so I told him good luck with the booking problem and that I’d be leaving in the morning. Then I went to eat lunch.

I miss the hell out of Peru and Bolivia right now. Things were so simple there. They always had what was on the menu because the menu was just one or two things (chicken and/or fish). You always could find a place to buy fresh bread, people didn’t crash into you on the streets because hardly anyone was on the streets and the paper currency didn’t feel like it was about to disintegrate in your hands.

Shopping for bike stuff went OK. I tracked down a nicely stocked place on Espana just west of Plaza 9 de Julio. For a spare tire I picked up a Maxxis Wormdrive Tyre Kevlar Folding tire (26 x 1.9). It seems like it’ll be strong enough to work on the rear wheel if I need it. It messes up my packing system a little but I’ll deal. For the first time I also have a side stand that mounts behind the bottom bracket. We’ll see how long this one lasts. If I had to guess this would be my 6th or 7th rear kickstand.

It’s been hot so I’ve been eating a lot of chocolate and drinking plenty of cold beer. The chocolate I have to keep eating because everytime I buy more it starts melting. You may be wondering why I don’t just stop buying more but there’s no need to psychoanalyze the situation. The absolute best thing about Salta (beside the plethora of beautiful women) is the availability of Warsteiner beer. That it comes in 1 liter bottles is just a bonus.

The greatest beer known to man? Quite possibly.
Fancy new kickstand.
My new spare tire.
Shiny money (from the scotch tape holding it together).
